Stephen Coit account books, 1812-1835.

Stephen Coit was a merchant in Canterbury, Connecticut . He joined his father in 1814, bought him out in 1822, and continued in Canterbury until 1833. At that point he moved to Norwich. Three of the four volumes are account books. The fourth is a daybook. The earliest account book (1812-1833) has very little description as to what patrons were buying. Later volumes, and the daybook, contain much more information about the dry goods and food items being purchased. Coit also recorded personal expenses, such as his daughters' schooling. One notable patron is Connecticut State Heroine, Prudence Crandall, also a resident of Canterbury.

4 volumes.
